History: Ben's early family life was burdened by struggle and poverty in a run-down area of New York. His father was an unemployed alcoholic and his brother was involved in crime. Like his brother Ben too became a Yancy Street gang leader

While young Ben suffered the loss of his brother, father and mother. Ben went to live with his doctor uncle and aunt and eventually put his gang member lifestyle behind him

Ben's natural strength and guile helped him excel at contact sports. He gained an athletic scholarship to Empire State University where he befriended fellow student Reed Richards. Ben went on to become a skilled pilot with the US Air Force

Ben can often be short-tempered and moody, in part a reaction to having to deal with his ungainly physical appearance

Unusual features: The Thing's body is covered with an orange, flexible, rock-like hide. The Thing has no apparent neck. He has only four fingers (including the thumb) on each hand and four toes on each foot. The increase in the volume of his fingers has not decreased his manual dexterity. His skin is apparently susceptible to "drying "or what in a normal human being would be called loss of skin oil, for his skin can be "chipped" under certain circumstances. The Thing has no outer ear structure.

Strength Level: The Thing possesses superhuman strength, enabling him to lift (press) 85 tons. The Thing's strength grew considerably over the initial years of his career. At one early point in his life as the Thing, for example, he could only lift (press) 5 tons.

Known Superhuman Powers: Endowed with superhuman strength and endurance. Permanently transformed physiology with larger, denser body mass covered in a craggy orange hide that is highly impervious to harm.

Abilities: The Thing is a brilliant pilot of aircraft. He has had a great deal of experience at hand-to-hand combat, and was a formidable opponent in physical combat even before becoming the Thing.
